The Kon-Tiki Expedition, 1947

The Kon-Tiki raft was built in 1947; it was made by taking as a model a copy of the wooden rafts that the South American Indians used in ancient times.

Six people, with Thor Heyerdahl among them, sailed in it. They departed from the
port of
El Callao
, in Peru, and arrived to the Island of Raroia, in the Polynesian Islands.

They sailed in the Kon-Tiki for 101 days along 8,000 kilometers of the Pacific Ocean.

This voyage proved Heyerdahl’s theory that the
Polynesian Islands were located at raft navigable distance from South America .

A TV documentary about the journey won an Oscar in 1951, and the book about the expedition has been translated to 66 languages.
